After a particularly hot summer, an excellent approach to getting back in shape is to walk. We are fortunate to nearby trails with varying degrees of difficulty. Our country roads also present beautiful vistas. When using roadways, however, be sure to face the traffic and walk single file. Wear comfortable shoes, highly visible clothing, and, if possible, a reflective vest. Walking may be more effective as conditioning than more strenuous activities; covering a mile in 15 minutes will burn as many calories as running the same distance in 8½ minutes. The use of hiking poles for balance is helpful to some.
